Sonam Wangchuk: Working for Sustainable Development of Ladakh
The people of Ladakh can be proud of Sonam Wangchuk, an engineer and environmentalist who has recently become famous all over the world due to his initiatives to support sustainable development in the mountains. The founder of the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives (HIAL) Wangchuck actively speaks for solving problems that discourage the development of the high-altitude desert area with innovative approaches.
Background and Vision
Wangchuk also achieved fame globally in the 2019 documentary ‘Before the Flood,” in which he discussed impact of climate change on the Himalayas. His emotions and determination to save the environment were modeled when he was young in the region of Ladakh that is most affected by climate change. His vision is more focused on reconstructing the Ladakh region sensitively into the modern world while maintaining the environmental integrity of the place.
Recent Initiatives
The same year 2024 Wanchuck introduced new programs on utilization of renewable resources and sustainable agriculture in the region of Ladakh. He admits that ‘Ice Stupa’ is one of his favourite projects, where ice storage method supports farmers with water during the dry season. The farmers are therefore able to harvest water even during the worst of winter hence greatly improving food production its indeed a great innovation that will definitely promote food security amongst the farming communities of the region.
